Golden retriever dogs and puppies in a scenic mountainous landscape.

Sage x Max (US x Scotland x Wales)

Litter Information

Litter Goals: Performance/Working Based Field Pedigrees

This cross produces an active, working-type golden retriever that is roughly three-quarters British/Scottish working blood and one-quarter American working blood. Physically, the dogs are typically lean, athletic, and darker in color, with practical, low-maintenance coats rather than heavy show feathering. Behaviorally, the mix aims to combine the speed and direct retrieving drive of American field stock with the calm focus, biddability, and natural scenting ability typical of Scottish lines. Because it brings together separate regional gene pools, it also provides a mild outcross that can help keep inbreeding numbers low, resulting in a capable hunting, active family or dog-sport prospect that needs regular training and mental stimulation.

Physical:

Predicted size: 55-75 pounds

Coat:  Field-bred weather-resistant two-layer coat consisting of a tight, dense undercoat for insulation and a shorter, coarse outer layer. Minimal feathering, built sleekly to repel water and resist tangles.

Head: Boxy with attractive muzzle, stop and length.

Athletic:  Our field or working golden retriever goals are to produce a lean, athletic high-stamina golden built for optimized active performance.

This breeding is a result of our breed preservation needs for a UK based pedigree. With Sage's US outcross we reach a 40% calculated AVK. A puppy will be kept and integrated into 3 of our 4 subpopulations.

Drumtochty is an established UK Kennel Club registered name managed by breeder Mrs. Sylvia Baird in Perthshire, Scotland, specializing in premium, high-drive working gundog lines. Highly regarded within the British field trialing and active hunting communities, the program focuses primarily on producing athletic, fully health-tested Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers. Unlike stockier conformation or show lines, Drumtochty dogs are bred strictly for physical stamina, structural soundness, and exceptional natural game-finding scent work. They are physically defined by a leaner, agile build—frequently exhibiting the rich gold or deep red coats characteristic of traditional Scottish working stock—and are known for producing particularly strong, independent, and capable working dams.

Sage  Representing an F1 Intercontinental Outcross, her pedigree strategically blends high-drive American field performance lineages with imported working heritage from the United Kingdom to maximize genetic health and diversity. Physically, Sage features a structurally balanced, athletic, and sturdy frame with solid bone density built for demanding field work and dog sports.

Genetic Diversity

This specific outbreeding approach aims to revitalize the breed’s genetic health by combining distinct American and British lineages, which helps reduce the risks associated with a narrow gene pool. By crossing these lines, the pedigree maintains the high drive and athleticism typical of US field lines while incorporating the sturdy bone structure and calm focus often found in UK working stock. The result is a versatile Golden Retriever that preserves its "bird dog" roots—possessing the marking ability, water courage and biddability required for modern hunting and performance tests while remaining a balanced, adaptable companion.
